In Memory of Cam Hantiuk
It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of our colleague and friend, Cam Hantiuk, on March 13, 2024.
Cam was our Director of Gov’t Relations and his witty catchphrases, humour, kindness and dedication will be greatly missed by all of us.
He was certainly one of a kind.
Cam worked as the director of Public Affairs, Western Canada for Waste Management and our sincerest condolences go out to not only his beloved wife Lisa and his family but to his WM family as well.

In Memory of Floyd Hunter
We are sad to announce the passing of Floyd Hunter this past Friday Dec 4th, 2020. Floyd was a well known member of the waste & recycling industry over the last 30+ years. Over the years Floyd had worked for Waste Management, BFI, Laidlaw, McRae, Smithrite and others. Before his retirement, Floyd's last 10 years had been working at Maple Leaf Disposal. Floyd continued to provide consultation services after retirement, as he just couldn't seem to leave the industry altogether. He will be missed. Our condolences go out to his wife Shirley and their 2 sons, Matt & Carl.

In celebration of Earth Day, Canadian Liquids Processors (CLP), a division of Emterra Group, is proud to announce the Emterra Hand Sanitizer, a new sanitizing solution designed to help essential businesses and organizations in the fight against COVID-19.
Produced in Hamilton, Ontario from reclaimed beverages, this circular economy product boasts an 80 per cent ethyl alcohol concentration, making it a safe and effective antibacterial skin disinfectant.
According to Sean O’Neill, General Manager at CLP, formulating a product that meets World Health Organization (WHO) specifications as well as the strict guidelines set out by Health Canada was a necessary but welcome milestone.
“We quickly retooled our operations to produce a Health Canada-approved hand sanitizer that workers in essential services and all industries can use to do their jobs safely and effectively,” said O’Neill. “From staff in long term care homes to our local first responders and waste management workers, we recognize the risk they are taking to support our communities during this difficult period and we are proud to support their life-saving work!”
Emterra Group employees and their families have been given the product the last several weeks in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The company is also proud to partner with the Ontario General Contractors Association, who will be raising awareness for the product and making it available to all their members.

In Memory of Norm Torgerson
Norm Torgerson, father of WMABC president Matt Torgerson & founder of AJM Disposal, passed away October 15, 2016 at the age of 58, with his family by his side. Norm was well known in the lower mainland waste industry in the 80’s & 90’s before moving to Midway, BC and opening up a small operation there. A Celebration of Life will be held on November 26, 2pm at the Midway Community Hall in Midway BC. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Canuck Place Children’s Hospice in Norm’s name.

Emterra Donates over $43,000 to Support Niagara Cancer Treatment Facility
ST. CATHARINES, ON (June 29, 2015) – Today Emterra Environmental presented a cheque for over $43,000 to OneFoundation for Niagara Health System to support cancer care in the region, bringing Emterra’s total donations since 2011 to more than $200,000.
The funding gift is earmarked for Niagara’s Walker Family Cancer Centre (WFCC) to help purchase cancer treatment equipment. Emterra has supported the cancer centre since it was opened in 2013. This year, the donation is one of the 40 special events that mark Emterra’s 40th anniversary celebration.

In Memory Of Bob Sangster
Bob Sangster, a long standing member in the waste & recycling industry, passed away peacefully on May 11, 2016 at the age of 67.
Bob was well known throughout the industry for his work in Metro Vancouver, then in Nanaimo.
Bob was a valued member of the WMABC, and volunteered many hours at the annual golf tournaments.
Bob is survived by his son John & daughter in law Diana.
Donations may be made to the Vancouver Hospice Society in Bob's honour.

In Memory Of Bob Marshall
Bob Marshall, a valued member of the Super Save family and long standing member in the waste & recycling industry, passed away peacefully on
May 11, 2015 at the age of 70. Bob was well known throughout the industry for his strong work ethic, his sense of humour and his valued friendship.
Bob is survived by his loving wife, Lana and his 2 daughters.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday May 23, 2015 at 2:00pm at the Valley View Funeral Home, 14660 70 Avenue, Surrey BC.
Beyond giving back to the environment, ABC Recycling works tirelessly to support the needs of BC Women’s critically ill newborns.
ABC Recycling Ltd., a British Columbia-based company that recycles scrap metal, has just launched its Donor of Hope program.
“Donate your scrap metal in support of BC Women's Newborn Intensive Care Unit and receive a tax receipt in return,” says manager of business development and procurement sales Randy Kahlon. Each year approximately 1,400 critically ill newborns are admitted to the hospital, where they receive the advanced medical care they need. “The 60-bed unit is the most advanced and specialized newborn critical care facility in B.C.,” Kahlon says. “But leading-edge care requires leading-edge equipment. To continue to provide the best care, the unit needs state-of-the-art tools and technologies. Your help and generosity can make that happen.” The Donor of Hope program is being coordinated by Karen Bichin, ABC Recycling's community relations manager. Bichin works with non-profit organizations on staff volunteer events. She also organizes school tours of the company's facilities, to show its positive effect on the environment. ABC Recycling has nine branches in western Canada: Burnaby (head office), Campbell River, Kelowna, Surrey, Prince George, Terrace, Nanaimo, Fort St. John (all in B.C.), and Grande Prairie, Alberta. The company buys household, industrial and demolition scrap that might otherwise end up in landfills, and processes and packages the material in its yards. ABC Recycling diverts up to 25,000 tons per month of scrap metal from municipal landfills. “Our customers can generate a secondary revenue source for themselves by earning a return on their scrap metal,” Kahlon says. ABC Recycling handles many types of scrap metals: Demolition and industrial scrap, end-of-life vehicles of all sizes and heavy equipment. It also deals in aluminum, brass, copper, stainless steel, titanium and other alloys.“Once the scrap metal is processed, it is shipped to customers in the United States and overseas, where it is recycled into new products,” explains Kahlon.
Progressive Waste Solutions Revs Up its Leadership in the Use of Natural Gas Powered Waste and Recycling Collection Vehicles
COQUITLAM, BC, Dec. 2, 2014 /CNW/ -
Progressive Waste Solutions (the "Company") today announced the official opening of its natural gas fueling station facility in Coquitlam that services the largest fleet of natural gas powered waste and recycling collection vehicles in BC and Canada.
"Our announcement today demonstrates our commitment to being a leader in the waste services sector, providing our customers the best service in the most sustainable way possible," said Grant Hankins, District Manager for Progressive Waste Solutions. "We are proud to have the largest fleet of natural gas powered waste and recycling collection vehicles in British Columbia and Canada."
Waste Control Services Supports PNE Zero Waste Day
On August 27th, the Pacific National Exhibition and Vancity hosted a successful zero waste event at the Fair.
WCS partnered with the PNE to surpass its 90% diversion goal for this event.
75 recycling and composting bins were stationed along the fairgrounds with the majority of them installed along the main and west food lines.
At least 35 of the stations were manned with volunteers from Green Chair and Vancity in an effort to encourage the 45,000 expected people in attendance to think twice about throwing out their waste.
Fairgoers were greeted by volunteers and educated on waste that can be recycled or composted and diverted from the garbage stream. Once bins were full, PNE staff brought bags to sorting stations and removed any remaining recyclable items (i.e. napkins, cups, bottles, food packaging and scraps) from the waste stream, and ultimately the landfill. WCS supplied large roll off containers to receive the diverted material, where it was weighed and sent downstream for processing.
The food scraps will be taken to Harvest Power and converted into high quality compost.
Sustainability Manager, Michael Woodman, has put in tremendous efforts to make this year’s Fair at the PNE the most sustainable yet. Woodman states, “It boils down to unbelievable partnerships.
If we didn’t have the partnership with WCS, if we didn’t have the partnership with Green Chair and the partnership with Vancity this would never happen.”
When asked about how it felt seeing the garbage bin virtually empty, Woodman responded, “I am overwhelmed by the success of today.”
Through combined efforts and support, the PNE was able to divert 94% of waste out the landfill.
